KB180104 - Norton blocking Internet Access

SYMPTOMS

You might get error message stating invalid parameter with WSDL SOAP or you might just get our Firewall detected message.

CAUSE

Norton usually blocks applications accessing the internet without even asking you, or sometimes you might hit deny access by accident and then Norton will block this application without prompting you in the future.

RESOLUTION

When a program such as Forms Reader tries to access a web site through your firewall, Norton Internet Security (NIS) prompts you to either allow or deny this access.  If you choose to deny it - whether on purpose or by mistake - then Norton will continue to block this process every time in the future. Particularly in cases where you're not the only person that uses a particular computer, it's important to take configure your firewall appropriately to prevent other users from inadvertently blocking Forms Reader applications that you need to permit.

To prevent this from happening - and to correct any previously-blocked programs - follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, [All] Programs, Norton Internet Security, Norton Internet Security.
  2. In the screen that appears, click the Norton Internet Security tab.
  3. Then click the Settings section and click Personal Firewall in the Web Browsing section.
  4. Click Configure in the options that appear.
  5. Next, click the Program Control in the Personal Firewall section on the left.
  6. You should see a list of programs that NIS is currently monitoring.  Since we have multiple files that need to be added to this list, we need to add and permit them individually by clicking Add.
  7. Browse to the Forms Reader program directory under Program Files .  (It's usually  C:\Program Files\Vinade\Forms Reader)
  8. Now, click the EXE file you want to add (as mentioned in the previous step) and click Open.  To help you find all the EXE files you need to permit, a list is included below:

    C:\Program Files\Vinade\Forms Reader

    • FormsLibrary.exe
    • FormReader.exe
  9. In the window that pops up, choose Allow and click OK.
Note Note:  If you receive a message indicating that there are already rules for the program you're trying to add, click OK and move on the next program file.
  10. When finished, scroll through your list of programs and verify that all of the applications are set to Allow for Internet access. In many cases the name of the application may be abbreviated or you may see an alternative name for the file. Look for either the file names above without the ".exe" on the end or one of the phrases as the name or part of the name for those applications. If you need to change one to Allow, just click it's status in the Access column and choose Allow out the the menu that appears.
  11. When you're finished, click OK to return to the main NIS 2007 screen and then click the X in the corner to close it.
